April 28, 2008

Eugene, OR  - Playing in the first and last regional championships in school history, both the men’s and women’s golf teams sit in seventh place after two rounds at Coeur d’Alene Golf Club in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Ashley King leads the women’s team, currently sitting in a tie for 14th place after rounds of 85 and 83 to open the tournament. Jordie Howell follows in 36th place after a record breaking day that twice saw her break her own scoring record. She opened with a 100 in round one and followed that up with a strong 94 in the second round. Her previous low round was a 102. Reanna Huston followed in 47th place shooting a 100-103=203 on the day. Colleen Koopal rounded out the scoring; shooting a 109-106=215, equaling what she was able to do over the first two rounds of the fourth CCC tournament a few weeks ago.

Leading the women’s regional tournament is the University of British Columbia, who sits at +48 as a team and holds a 24-stroke lead over second-place Rocky Mountain College. Concordia sits in third place to hold the lead among Cascade Collegiate Conference teams. The Beacons are seventh overall and second among CCC foes, holding a 36-stroke lead over third-place Corban. Kaitlin Troop of UBC leads the field at +7 after rounds of 75 and 76 in the opening day.

Justin Ahrens leads the men’s contingent, sitting in a tie for 20th after rounds of 74 and 78 on the opening day. Brent McKee follows one stroke behind with a 77-76 on day one. Josh Samples is in 34th place with rounds of 80-78. Rounding out the scoring is Jeremy Chappell, with scores of 87 and 82. Jordan Whittenburg sits one stroke behind the team’s top-four at +26. He recorded a season-low score of 84 in the first round and followed with an 86.

The University of British Columbia, ranked #3 in the NAIA, is running away with the men’s team title and is currently at -19. The University of Victoria is 31 strokes back at +12. Concordia University is in fifth place to lead the CCC contingent. The  Beacons are seventh overall and third among the Cascade Conference, 14 shots back of Corban. British Columbia’s Blake Rowe-Sleeman shot a 69-64=133 for a -11 opening day to lead the field.

The teams will play the third and final round this morning to close out the 2008 season. Next year the NAIA moves to a direct-qualification plan for national tournament and will abolish the current region system, thus this will be the only Region tournament for the Beacons.
