Weigandt Resigns as Head Volleyball Coach
January 15, 2008
Eugene, OR - The Northwest Christian College Athletic Department announced on Tuesday the resignation of women’s volleyball coach Dale Weigandt. Weigandt was the inaugural coach for NCC volleyball, starting a club team in 2005 and guiding the first teams through the transition into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and the Cascade Collegiate Conference.
Weigandt, who currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent and Recreation Director for the River Road Parks and Recreation District, has a pending promotion to become the new Superintendent and will be focusing his efforts on that endeavor. “My new responsibilities will keep me from having enough free time to devote to the kids and to the program,” said Weigandt.
“I will miss the girls and I will miss the opportunity I had to put God first in our practice and games,” he added. “The way that sports can get those competitive juices flowing is great, but having the Lord there to keep it the way sports was intended to be played has been wonderful. In my 23 years of coaching, I can honestly say that the last three were my favorite. It has been my privilege to meet so many promising young women that I am confident will be very successful when they move on.”
Weigandt finishes his two-year stint with the Beacons with a record of 25-29. His inaugural team went 13-12 in 2006 and the following year he led the Beacons to a 6-14 season in their first year of play in the CCC. Prior to his coming to Northwest Christian, Weigandt had a four-year stint at Lane Community College. In his final season he led the Titans to third place in the NWAACC and took home Coach of the Year Honors. Previously, he had spent 14 years as the head varsity coach at North Eugene High School, where he led three Highlander teams to the state playoffs. He was named the Midwestern Valley League Coach of the Year in 1993.
Athletic Director Corey Anderson said, “Dale did a terrific job of incorporating everything that NCC stands for within our volleyball program. Anyone that ever walked into the Morse Event Center during a game or a practice would leave knowing that Coach Weigandt loved coaching volleyball and loved coaching this team. His passion for the game and for his players was evident in everything that they did. While Dale is leaving us for all the right reasons, he will be missed tremendously by the team, the athletic department and our overall campus community.”
A search for a new coach will begin immediately. Inquiring parties are encouraged to contact Athletic Director Corey Anderson at (541) 684-7354 or via email to canderson@nwcc.edu.
