Mission Statement
Faculty members involved in the Master of Education program work together to prepare highly-qualified teachers who exemplify high standards of leadership, professionalism, scholarship, and ethical behavior within the framework of best-educational practices.
Overview of the M.Ed. Program
The M.Ed. is a master’s degree program that is designed for school professionals, educators or others who want to develop educational competencies for professional growth. The M.Ed. offers two concentration areas to allow the student to choose the pathway in accordance with their professional development goals. Students may concentrate in two areas: (1) Curriculum and Instruction or (2) Instructional Technology.
The Master’s Degree in Education with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction provides the practitioner requisite skills to act as a teacher leader and curriculum designer in school communities and learning organizations. This concentration area is suitable for individuals who currently hold an Initial Teachers license but are seeking advanced content knowledge and application. The Master’s Degree in Education with an emphasis in Instructional Technology is a broad-based program designed to train professionals to improve learning and instruction through the coordinated use of instructional materials, human resources and technology.
Structure of the M.Ed. Program
Students in the M.Ed. program are required to enroll in foundational “core” courses designed to initiate the research process and identification of personal interests and individual skill development that defines the concentration area which will align with self-initiated personal goals.
Each student will be assigned an advisor who will assist with planning, scheduling courses and endorsement selection. This advisor will provide support in the planning process and professional development process. Regular meetings with the assigned advisor will ensure progress and goal attainment.
The classes are offered in a hybrid model that includes in class instruction one night a week for eight weeks, on line instruction, and the occasional Saturday. The program is designed for a cohort model but sufficiently flexible to accommodate individual educational plans. The Foundational courses focus on common issues and theories with an emphasis on classroom application. During the application process, students indicate their professional goals with their advisor while planning for their research and outline requisite steps within the professional development seminar. |
