Mathematics

Mathematics provides the foundation for understanding the world we live in.  Most scientific principles are expressed in mathematics as are computer programs, many business processes, and even music.  Everyone uses mathematics daily in their work and life.  It can involve something as simple as adding two numbers together or balancing your checkbook, to solving complex calculus equations or working on the cutting edge of quantum physics.

Mathematicians are employed in a variety of organizations, such as insurance companies, government, businesses (both profit and non-profit), airlines, and research, to name just a few.  Jobs include activities such as quality control, data analysis, teaching, research, and engineering.  Mathematicians participate in applied problem solving, helping decision makers to address real-world issues. Or they can work in the realm of pure mathematics developing new and fundamental ideas.  All of mathematics is applicable in some way.

Northwest Christian offers both a major and a minor in mathematics.  As prerequisites, students take either physics or chemistry and a computer programming class.  Courses in the program range from algebra and geometry to statistics, calculus, and analysis.  Students who pursue a teacher education degree can take a basic mathematics endorsement for teaching elementary and middle school and an advanced endorsement for teaching high school.  Students who earn the advanced endorsement receive a minor in mathematics.  This program will also prepare students for advanced graduate work.  NCU offers you the opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge in this area in an environment of faith and values along with a strong foundation in ethical decision-making.  So, if you like to play with numbers or abstract equations, then this major is the one for you.

Campus Activities

Students in the mathematics major will have opportunities to provide tutoring for other students at Northwest Christian, thereby developing their skills and assisting other students to understand mathematics.
