Northwest Christian College Holds Stone-Campbell Symposium
Eugene, Ore. --- The church’s high privilege of “telling the story” of God’s love for all people will be the focus of this year’s Stone-Campbell Symposium, an annual event sponsored by Northwest Christian College (NCC). The Stone-Campbell Symposium offers a series of six lectures, held on Monday, Feb. 25, and Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. both days.
This year’s Symposium, “The Church as Storyteller” (Hebrews 11:1 - 12:3), will feature addresses by Dr. Jerry Rushford, professor of religion and director of church relations at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif., telling stories of such Stone-Campbell luminaries as Alexander Campbell, Barton Stone, James A. Garfield, and Oregon’s own pioneer preacher, A. L. Todd. Worship at each session will be led by Todd Hall, worship leader at Southwest Church of Christ in Tigard, Ore.
The public is invited to attend the Stone-Campbell Symposium. Details and registration information are available at www.nwcc.edu/calendar/featured/stone-campbell.htm, or by phoning (541) 684-7241. Registration is $20 per person.
NCC is affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the Christian Churches/Churches of Christ, both of which share a common heritage with the Churches of Christ in the Stone-Campbell Movement.
In conjunction with NCC’s Homecoming Weekend, bronze busts of Barton W. Stone and Alexander Campbell, founders of the 19th century Restoration Movement, will be unveiled during a special chapel service on Friday, Feb. 15, at 11 a.m., in the B. Ross Evans Chapel on campus.
The busts are a gift from members of NCC’s Class of 1957 who donated the funds for the gift. Campbell’s bust will be dedicated to the memory of the late Dr. Ross J. Griffeth, president of NCC from 1944-1965. Stone’s bust will be dedicated to the memory of the late Dr. Bill Hays, president of NCC from 1978-1985. Dr. Hays was also a member of the Class of 1957.
Gene Swanson of the Class of 1956 and sculptor of the busts, will attend to help present them. Swanson previously sculpted a bust of Eugene Sanderson, founder and first president of Eugene Divinity School – now Northwest Christian College. The two new busts will sit on pedestals adjacent to the bust of President Sanderson in the lobby of the B. Ross Evans Chapel on campus.
