ARTIST STATEMENT & BIO
I am a self-taught artist who maintains a small studio in Winsted at Whiting Mills. I exhibit locally in Connecticut and have shown my work in group shows across the United States.
I am inspired by animal stories, folklore, mythology, and fairy tales. While my work pulls directly from these sources, my goal is not to illustrate but rather give one the same uncanny feeling derived from reading or hearing those stories. My figures and landscapes are ambiguous; inviting the viewer to fill in the blanks.
My recent explorations have gone deep. Deep into the forest, the ocean, the unconscious, miniature ecologies, the grotesque and the beautiful, unrequited love, and danger. I have applied paint thickly and cut deeply into it to create surfaces which tell stories within the larger narratives on the canvases. Other layers beneath the thick impasto are partially visible; they are lost stories which inform the present work. I hope each canvas will reveal something new each time it is viewed.
